Every computer user wants to know about the Hard Disk, its partitions, Hard Disk types, Formatting Hard Disk etc. So this post is to discuss about some basics of Hard Disk.

Hard disk drive is the important part of our computer because it contains all our data. Operating System is also on the hard disk. So the hard disk has its own importance. As motherboard is main computer part and intermediary for all devices and peripherals, Hard Disk is also connected to motherboard by a cable.

Types of Hard Disks

There are two types of hard disks
IDE : Integrated Drive Electronics.
SCSI : Small Computer System Interface.

IDE Harddisks again divided into two
SATA Hard Disk and PATA Hard Disk
Now let’s differentiate in between them

SATA Vs PATA HDD
- SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment and PATA stands for Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment.
- SATA HDD has the speed of 7700 – 10000 RPM while PATA HDD has the speed of 5400 – 7200 RPM.
- SATA Dard Disk has 7 pins whereas PATA Hard Disk has 4 pins.
- SATA HDD supports new varieties of motherboard while PATA supports all types of motherboards.

Latest motherboards have both SATA and IDE ports available on it. But as the speed of SATA Hard Disk is better than PATA IDE Hard Disk therefore it is always recommended.
